West Suffolk College - Fired with ambition
Two groups of Public Services students completed a six week Introduction to the Fire Service Course with a demonstration and graduation ceremony at Haverhill Fire Station in May. [Wednesday 21 and 28 May 2008]
The students had been training with fire hoses, stand pipes, ladders and search and rescue equipment, as well as supporting the community in fire prevention advice. They gave a demonstration of the skills they had learned.
“The Suffolk Fire Service has been doing great work with our Public Service students,” said course director Mark Wyatt. “All the students have a genuine interest in joining the Fire Service and this course has given them a taste of what might be their future employment. “Fire Service officers have given several hundred working hours for free in organising and running this course for us. We are extremely grateful for their unstinting efforts.”
There have been two separate courses, with 12 students on each, running alternately over a six week period. The students are enrolled on Foundation Diploma and National Diploma courses at the College.
