Sunny South Suffolk Show

West Suffolk College won the Challacombe Trophy for the most innovative trade stand at the South Suffolk Show for the third time in four years in 2009.

A fantastic sunny day attracted thousands of visitors to the show at Ampton, with attendance breaking all records.

West Suffolk College had their busiest year at the Show.  There were a number of free activities and entertainments set up in and around the College marquee, as well as the opportunity to find out about courses and training on offer at the College.

Carpentry students and staff helped members of the public construct over 250 bird boxes, which were then passed on to the Painting and Decorating team for professional stencilling.

A team of staff undertook face painting which proved tremendously popular. Children also took part in an arch-building activity. There were demonstrations of brickwork and other skills.

Finally, dancers from the E0.45 Dance group performed a number of routines that thrilled the crowds.

Two competitions were run on the day each with a prize of a £10 WH Smith voucher. Daniel Sprindzuky won a competition to guess the number of nails in a jar. Eden Cross won a competition to identify famous landmarks.

“The atmosphere on the stand was tremendous, said Sales & Marketing manager Emmanuelle Durand. “All staff and students were busy either helping visitors to build something or talking about training opportunities. Many visitors commented on the friendliness and helpfulness of all team.

“It was very rewarding to see children and parents building something and taking it back with them as a souvenir of the show, with a smile on their face.”
